Different Approaches to the Knee

STANDARD APPROACH

The standard approach is a long incision on the front of the knee to gain access to the knee joint. Dr. Allison currently only uses this incision on larger patients and on revision knee replacements.  In this approach, the knee cap is turned upside down and the knee bent in order to make room to work on the knee. This was the original way of gaining access to the knee. It is the approach most American Surgeons use at this time.
